Wawa plans to build a convenience store and fuel station near the entrance to the Carter’s Crossing shopping center off U.S. 17 in Stafford County. The Pennsylvania-based company, which has numerous locations in the Fredericksburg region, has signed a land-lease with project developer the Silver Cos. for a 4,300-square-foot store with six fuel pumps on a 1.64-acre parcel at the intersection of U.S. 17 and South Gateway Drive. The planned location is almost right off Interstate 95 and in front of a strip shopping center that includes NextCare, Verizon and Tropical Smoothie stores. There would be entrances and exits off both U.S. 17 and South Gateway Drive. Wawa has another store a little more than a mile away at 830 Warrenton Road that is on the same side of U.S. 17 and I-95. Lisa Henderson Schoonover, an executive vice president with Silver Commercial Brokerage, said Wawa studied the traffic there and determined it could support a second location. Wawa needs a conditional use permit from Stafford for the project in order to sell fuel there. Silver officials hope to be in front of the Stafford Planning Commission on the matter by October.
