There will be an empty seat at tomorrow night’s Stafford County School Board meeting.
But members hope to fill that vacancy in about a month. And the board is now seeking applications.
The Garrisonville District seat has been vacant since Ty Schieber resigned Jan. 10 to serve on the county’s Board of Supervisors.
Schieber replaces Mark Duden hefer, the Garrisonville supervisor who was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in November.
The School Board has 45 days from Shieber’s resignation to find a replacement. Members are now looking for applicants from the Garrisonville District.
And while the requirements for the job are pretty basic, Stafford School Board Chairwoman Steph anie Johnson said, any potential candidate should also be a good listener, have some familiarity with budgets and be able to keep on top of local, state and national education issues.
“It is a learning process and you have to be willing to learn,” Johnson said.
To qualify, a resident must be a registered voter in that North Staf ford district.
Applicants should submit a letter of interest and a résumé.
Additionally, two forms need to be filled out: an application and a certificate of candidate qualification. Both can be found on the Stafford Coun ty Public Schools website: stafford.schoolfusion.us.
The School Board will decide tomorrow whether to conduct the candidates’ in terviews in public, as the supervisors did.
All applications must be in by 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 3.
“Hopefully there will be folks who will be interested and have something to bring to the rest of the board to represent Garrisonville and the county,” Johnson said.
Though the School Board will name an interim mem ber, it still has to decide when a special election will be held to fill the remainder of Schieber’s term, which ends Dec. 31, 2013.
The Board of Supervisors set a special election for the Garrisonville supervisor seat for April 3.
