Spotsylvania County firefighters have spent much of Sunday afternoon battling a large brush fire on land off Jackson Trail West, said Spotsylvania Deputy Fire Chief Monty Willaford. The fire, whose origin is unknown, burned fields, woods and a couple of old sheds on both National Park Service and private property, but Willaford said firefighters kept it from reaching any nearby homes or barns. Area residents reported seeing heavy smoke from the blaze on nearby Courthouse Road. The original 911 call came in at 2:53 p.m. Career and volunteer firefighters got the blaze under control and remained to put out hotspots, Willaford said.
