A Stafford County deputy who happened to be in the right place at the right time apprehended a suspected thief Saturday, police said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Bill Kennedy said Deputy Larry Sturdivant was on Warrenton Road heading to an unrelated call when he received notice to be on the lookout for someone who had just taken money from the Handy Mart at 1186 Warrenton Road.

The clerk reported that she was reading a paper when she heard the door open.  A masked man took money from a donation jar that Kennedy said was earmarked for a special need in another country.

The clerk immediately called 911, and a short time later Sturdivant saw a man who matched the suspect’s description in the median. The deputy stopped and challenged the man, and later found a mask, a knife and some money in the man’s pocket, police said.
Sturdivant took the suspect to the Handy Mart, and the clerk positively identified him.

Cameron Hunt, 19, of Stafford was charged with robbery and wearing a mask in public. He was placed in the Rappahannock Regional Jail under no bond.
