The roster news keeps coming: the Redskins today also released veteran defensive end/linebacker Andre Carter and tendered a restricted free-agent qualifying offer to inside linebacker H.B. Blades.

Carter’s play suffered during a rocky transition from 4-3 defensive end to 3-4 left outside linebacker last season. He ceded playing time to Lorenzo Alexander before Redskins coaches decided mid season to use Carter as a rush end in passing situations.

“I’m very thankful that the Redskins let me go instead of making me sit and wait,” Carter said in a phone conversation. “It’s better to do it now, sooner than later.”

Like offensive lineman Derrick Dockery, who also was released Tuesday, Carter did not complain publicly about his situation. Carter, 31, had 11 sacks in 2009 but only 2.5 last season. He totaled 34 sacks in his five seasons with the Redskins.

He plans to seek out a new team that runs a 4-3 defense so he can return to playing defensive end.

“That’s just who I am,” he said. “It’s just something that God made me to do.”

The Redskins also tendered Blades, a fourth-year linebacker, as a restricted free agent, according to a league source. The level of the tender could not be obtained.

Blades had 13 tackles on defense and 11 on special teams last season.
